GreenTechMedia.com’s 10 Steps to Effective Workplace Energy Efficiency

An article on GreentechMedia.com lays out 10 steps to effective workplace energy efficiency. You can read the full article here, but the 10 steps are:

  1. Upper management must take ownership of the energy efficiency program.
  2. Make the program public, so employees and tenants at all levels buy in.
  3. Offer motivation through branding, and energy efficiency program swag.
  4. Create teams and committees to execute energy management plans across the organization.
  5. Assign champions to be exemplary participants in different energy efficiency programs.
  6. Have effective communication concerning the energy efficiency program.
  7. Provide feedback that enables individuals to change their personal behavior when it comes to energy management.
  8. Tie energy consumption and reduction into performance reviews.
  9. Invest in automation and occupancy detection technology.
  10. Track and report accurate energy consumption data.

It’s a great article, I noticed the last two steps in particular.

Occupancy detection devices allow an organization to automatically control lighting and heating and cooling systems automatically when individuals enter and exit a room. These systems can also be automatically controlled when they’re integrated with scheduling software. This allows an organization to take tighter control of their energy consumption by eliminating human error and carelessness.

The tenth step, addressing tracking and reporting is something we place a huge importance on here at PeopleCube. We truly believe that you can’t manage what you don’t measure. So tracking and measuring energy consumption is extremely important. This can be done through energy management systems, business intelligence solutions, and occupancy detection devices.
