ESTA Conference Highlights Importance of Energy Management In The UK
Last Thursday, February 23, The UK’s leading energy management industry body- the Energy Services and Technology Association (ESTA)- held their 10th annual conference in Coventry.
A highlighted theme at the conference was the importance of investing in energy management technology to take control of energy consumption inside an organization or building.
Alan Aldridge , executive director of ESTA, said, “While automatic aM&T is well-embedded as a key energy management tool, it is still a young and developing technology. It’s continually finding new applications and innovative ways to help energy and facilities managers save money, control emissions and cut consumption.”
Energy management tools can make a significant dent in your energy consumption and costs. These tools monitor energy consumption and manage systems across your organization and real estate. This allows you to identify usage trends and the energy consumption associated with the utilization of rooms and resources. Energy management systems also allow organizations to control energy consumption based on occupancy and scheduling of rooms and resources.

The Importance Of Energy Management Isn’t Reaching The Board
A new report by Siemens shows that in the UK, 33% of those who are in charge of an organization’s energy management believe that the matter of energy management isn’t being taken seriously by their organization and it’s board members. This is in great contrast to the 83% of board members who believe that their energy management efforts are where they should be.
What may be more concerning for organizations is that many board directors aren’t even aware of what their energy bill is, or what their organization’s investment in energy management is. See how you can easily access business intelligence and energy consumption data.
It’s important that energy management becomes a major priority for organizations at all levels, and it has to start in the board room. In the past it may have been difficult for board members to access information concerning energy use and costs, but now there are energy management solutions that will deliver this information easily and in a way that is easy to understand.
Ignoring energy management is a massive mistake. We’ve seen energy costs reduced by 30% after implementing an energy management solution to monitor and control usage.

Organizations Still Not Placing Enough Importance On Energy Management
Richard Rugg, Director of Carbon Trust Programme, doesn’t understand why more organizations aren’t taking energy management seriously and quite frankly we here at PeopleCube couldn’t agree more. We’ve seen customers cut their energy costs by 30% or more simply by monitoring and controlling how – and when – their energy is consumed.
Of course efficiently managing an organizations energy consumption can reduce energy costs but the return on investment for energy management solutions goes beyond cutting energy costs. Managing an organization’s energy consumption can help an organization meet government energy standards that can lead to incentives like tax breaks.
A new guide, that was put together by Carbon Trust Programmes, compares poor energy management practices with good energy management practices.
Poor energy management practices are listed as; treating energy costs as an unquestioned overhead; having no clear or consistent chain of responsibility for energy management; a lack of awareness of energy issues; and procuring energy from the same supplier year-on-year, without a cost comparison.
Good energy management is treating energy as a strategic issue and its management as an opportunity, with strong guidance from board level permeating through to rewarded action throughout the workforce, with adequate resources and business planning attached to it.
There are a number of solutions available to assist organizations of all sizes in energy management. A true energy management program really needs to involve monitoring, controlling, and efficient scheduling of each and everyone of an organization’s resources.

Implementing A Successful Real Estate Business Intelligence Program
Real estate is typically an organization’s second largest expense behind personnel. With real estate being such a large expense it’s important to efficiently monitor and manage an organization’s real estate along with the operational costs that go along with it.
Real estate business intelligence software that can be integrated with multiple systems allows an organization to track all aspects of their corporate real estate. This allows insight into how rooms and resources are being used, their peak times of use, actual versus planned utilization, and even the energy consumption associated with an individual room or resource.
This is all incredibly valuable real estate business intelligence data but unfortunately some business intelligence systems deliver the data in a way that isn’t very easy to read, understand, and put to use. Other business intelligence solutions turn the data into easily understood business intelligence visualizations that can make delivery of the data quick, easy, and understandable for members through out your organization.
The Benefits of Successful Real Estate Business Intelligence
For those of you who have already invested in real estate business intelligence you probably already understand and have begun to see the benefits and returns associated with it. Efficient real estate business intelligence programs will produce cost savings for your organization based on reduced energy consumption and even giving you the ability to reduce your real estate based on the real estate business intelligence data.
You can also make this data available to a number to your whole organization easily through SaaS. Employees that are aware of their actual levels of energy consumption or usage of rooms and resource are more apt to make more efficient use of those rooms and resources.

6 Steps for ISO 50001 Energy Management Certification
In a GreenBiz.com webcast last week, Paul Scheihing, the Technology Manager for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Industrial Technologies Program, laid out 6 steps for an organization to become ISO 5001 certified, the newest energy management standard.
6 Steps to Become ISO 50001 Certified
- Secure support from management
- Collect, track, and analyze energy data
- Identify key energy use
- Establish a baseline
- Identify energy saving opportunities
- Prioritize opportunities to save energy
Looking at the six steps what really jumps out is the ability to know and understand how and where your energy is being used inside your facilities. Being able to track energy consumption from multiple sources allows an organization to see where they could be using less energy. It’s quite possible that an organization may be powering rooms that are being left un-used or under utilized. By understanding the energy usage and actual utilization of individual rooms and resources an organization can then identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption.
