Going Green Should Be Looked At As An Opportunity To Create Savings, Not An Expense

Iamge from:howart.infoIn today’s world it can be extremely beneficial if an organization can brag and boast about being a green organization. People want to do business with organizations who consume less energy and have less of an impact on the environment. At the same time, today’s world also sees organizations trying to cut costs and reduce spending, which in some cases has led executives and owners of organizations to believe that their organization doesn’t always have the green to go green.

Going green will improve your organization’s reputation but it can also improve your organization’s bottom line as well. Going green shouldn’t be looked at as simply an expense but rather an opportunity to reduce costs for your organization.

One place where going green can create significant savings for an organization is their real estate and corporate resources. Just think of the cost associate with office buildings and the energy it takes to keep them operating. It is true that going out and replacing all of your old equipment and systems with newer more energy efficient equipment can become pricy, but there are other ways your organization can make their operations more green.

Organizations can invest in energy management solutions that monitor and control their current lighting and HVAC systems and the usage of rooms and other resources. This doesn’t call for existing systems to be replaced. Instead, an energy management system will assist an organization in getting more efficient use of their existing systems and real estate. Energy management systems have been known to reduce energy costs by 30% or more by simply monitoring and controlling energy consumption.

As with anything, there is concern of the costs of implementing an energy management system. Fortunately energy management software solutions are available through SaaS. This means organizations won’t have to make a large payment up front, but instead smaller monthly payments to use the software, making it easier to see ROI much faster.

Wisconsin School District Reducing Costs Through Energy Management

The Black River Falls School District in Wisconsin has made a strong commitment to energy management in hopes of reducing energy costs and energy consumption. The goals of their energy management program include:

  • Minimize the impact energy cost increases will have on the budget
  • Maintain a reliable supply of energy to meet the functional needs of the District
  • Ensure that energy is used efficiently

The school district seems to have the right idea when it comes to energy management, as they want all staff and students to be involved in the energy management program as well. It’s important when implementing an energy management program to have buy in and participation from an entire organization. One way to encourage members to participate in energy management is making energy consumption data available to them through digital signage and on demand software applications. If members of the faculty and student body see how their actions can effect the overall energy consumption, they’re more likely to change their habits. Read the rest of this entry »

TMCnet’s 7 Benefits Of Integrated Energy Management

This morning I was sent a great article on integrated energy management by a colleague. TMCnet lays out the 7 Benefits of Integrated Energy Management. Integrated energy management allows an organization to track the energy consumption of all of their systems not just a single system. All of the data can then be pulled into one real estate business intelligence solution like Workplace BI. The real estate business intelligence system can then allow you to view your organization’s energy consumption business wide or down to each individual resource.

The 7 Benefits of Integrated Energy Management From TMCnet

1.Simplicity

A unified operations center should aggregate all types of data, devices, applications, and software engines to provide a single integrated view of energy data across an enterprise. For example, smaller rural and/or cooperatively owned utilities are much more likely than their larger metropolitan brethren to be the sole-source provider for gas, water and/or electricity in their particular coverage area, and a unified view of these resources significantly simplifies system administration. Moreover, a single DSM platform that can span a broad variety of customer classes – residential, commercial/industrial, and business – extends the ROI of technology investments while reducing the human resources needed to manage them.

2. Efficiency

Intuitive workflow tools that enable self-service analysis and reporting for energy management staff throughout a utility can minimize overhead while maximizing data accuracy and consistency. For example, rather than trying to gain access to energy usage information from the metering department to model a new load shifting program, a DSM operator should be able to pull the appropriate data on demand. Holistic visibility into how and when energy is used makes it possible to quickly quantify the impact of new programs and/or system changes, and make necessary adjustments in real-time.

3. Insight

You can’t adequately manage demand when you lack visibility into energy use and operational status. The ideal DSM platform delivers the insight necessary to improve operations, allowing for better management of energy to the benefit of both the utility and the customer. It empowers improved decision making, load management and pricing strategies by unifying a utility’s energy data and providing insights through advanced analytics. This insight also provides value to multiple business units across a utility. For instance, it can provide financial and back-office staff real-time visibility into operational health, the cost/benefit of new hardware, and more.

4. Cost Savings

Since they are owned by their customers, co-op and municipal utilities are typically focused first on customer/member cost savings, as opposed to profitability.

This focus aligns well with the efficiency and conservation improvements derived from well-implemented DSM programs. The best DSM platforms will be both utility and customer-centric, enabling the utility to manage demand and costs, while providing its customer the flexibility to manage their usage according to their lifestyle and needs. Automated DSM control strategies – which enable customers to save energy in response to utility price and/or demand signals – provide the best assurance of ongoing savings and positive program impact.

5. Flexibility

Deploying a unified operations center and a suite of effective DSM programs is a long-term investment with long-term payoff. DSM platforms have to be flexible and provide the ability to expand over time into a broad portfolio of load management programs. These platforms must also flex to incorporate new software or hardware, and provide the ability to model, test, and fine-tune programs and incentives for maximum efficiency.

6. Compliance

Regulatory compliance is both critical to utility viability and notoriously time consuming to document and demonstrate. The same advanced analytics and detailed metrics that provide management insight can also deliver the ability to rapidly quantify regulatory compliance (e.g. power quality, outages, loss reduction) across all systems and customers.

7. Impact

The combined value of simplified administration, increased efficiency, cost savings, flexibility, and aggregated, consistent, and validated data that a unified operations center can provide will not only reduce costs and improve operations for utilities – but it will also have a huge positive impact on customers.

The Canadian Standards Association Brings ISO 50001 Energy Management Standard to Canada

The Canadian Standards Association, or CSA, has announced the availability of the ISO 50001 energy management standard in Canada. The ISO 50001 is the first global energy management systems standard. The ISO 50001 standard has been put in place to assist organizations around the world in reducing energy consumption and energy costs to their organization.

Organizations that demonstrate compliance with the ISO 50001 energy management standard will have an energy management system in place, have completed an established baseline of energy use, and will have committed to continuous improvement of its energy performance.

School In Michigan To Receive $370K In Utility Rebates Due To Implementing An Energy Management Syste,

In Coldwater, Michigan the schools will be implementing a new energy management system. The energy management system will be able to control multiple systems inside their facilities and it can all be done through a website. Implementing an energy management system for schools can reduce energy consumption and cut costs for school systems in a time where school systems are looking to save every last penny.

Implementing an energy management system not only can reduce energy consumption and cut costs but the Coldwater Schools will also receive $370,000 in utility rebates due to the implementation of their new energy management system.

Schools can clearly benefit from the implementation of an energy management system but they are not alone. Any organization would benefit from implementing an energy management system that both monitors and manages their energy consumption. Savings are created through reduced energy usage and other incentives the government has and should continue to put in place for organizations and businesses who make investments in energy management.
