Three Reasons Organizations Are Adopting The ISO 50001 Energy Management Standard

Recently we’ve talked quite a bit about the new ISO 50001 Energy Management Standard. The standard defines how executives can establish an  energy management plan for their organization.

A recent article on CSEMag.com outlines the three factors that make the ISO 50001 Energy Management Standard so appealing to organizations. They are as follows:

  1. ISO 50001 is applicable to any size and type of organization in any country and to every type of building using any type of energy from any source. And, it’s designed to be integrated with organizational policies and practices already in place—so organizations do not have to reinvent themselves around energy management.
  2. ISO 50001 adopters can self-certify or undergo a third-party audit, which supports small companies that can’t afford the audits, and enables the larger companies to boast their certifications. And, the ISO brand is regarded highly all over the world. This isn’t yet another new standard by yet another new organization nudging its way into the crowded green scene.
  3. ISO 50001 is wholeheartedly supported by the U.S. EPA Energy Star program and the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE). EPA and DOE will release tool kits in October 2011 to help organizations adopt ISO 50001, and the standard is being embedded in overarching programs, such as the Superior Energy Performance program for manufacturers.

As noted in CSEMag.com’s third item, the EPA and DOE will release tool kits to assist in the adoption of the ISO 50001 Energy Management Standard, but there are already energy management solutions available to assist organizations in managing their energy consumption as well.

Larger Organizations Should Adopt ISO 50001 & Energy Management Solutions

This morning I came across an interesting article on GreenBiz.com that suggested WalMart and other larger organizations adopt the ISO 50001 Energy Management Standard, which would lead to energy savings, reduced carbon emissions and more efficient supply chains.

In order to be in compliance with the energy standard WalMart and any other organization should invest in real estate business intelligence software to track energy consumption and their carbon footprint. Business intelligence solutions delivered by SaaS make energy management data more accessible to a wider range of employees. A number of studies have shown that when employees are aware of energy usage data they are more likely to reduce their consumption.

Measuring and monitoring your energy consumption will go a long way to reduce energy consumption and assist an organization come in to compliance with energy management standards like the ISO 50001.

6 Steps for ISO 50001 Energy Management Certification

In a GreenBiz.com webcast last week, Paul Scheihing, the Technology Manager for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Industrial Technologies Program, laid out 6 steps for an organization to become ISO 5001 certified, the newest energy management standard.

6 Steps to Become ISO 50001 Certified

Looking at the six steps what really jumps out is the ability to know and understand how and where your energy is being used inside your facilities. Being able to track energy consumption from multiple sources allows an organization to see where they could be using less energy. It’s quite possible that an organization may be powering rooms that are being left un-used or under utilized. By understanding the energy usage and actual utilization of individual rooms and resources an organization can then identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption.

New ISO 50001 Energy Management Standard To Be Released

ISO 50001 is a new energy management standard that will establish a framework for industrial plants, commercial facilities, and even entire organizations to manage their energy consumption. Putting a standard in place will encourage organizations to adopt energy management solutions that will improve their energy performance.

Energy is the third largest expense for businesses, only behind employees and real estate. It represents 19% of an organization’s expenses and also makes up 75% of an organization’s carbon footprint. The ISO 50001 standard will give organizations a goal concerning their energy management, and will help drive the implementation of energy management solutions, ultimately resulting in a reduced environmental impact and significant cost savings for the organization.
