Telework Needs To Change The Work Environment In The Office
I came across a blog on Govloop.com this morning. The post discussed how when we think of telework, we no longer just think about people working from home in their pajamas. Instead we think of telework as a way of changing how and when we work, but it goes beyond just changing the way we work outside of the office, we also expect changes to come in how we work inside the office that stem from telework.
With more people working outside of the office they now expect work inside of the office to consist of more collaboration with fellow employees. The office needs to be an environment that supports collaboration and allows employees to work together in the most efficient way. So, how does telework play into this? It’s simple, with more people teleworking and working outside of the office there are traditional workspaces like desks and cubicles going under utilized every day. The problem is that many organizations don’t measure actual utilization and track the occupancy of their space.
By tracking occupancy and measuring the actual utilization of space organizations can begin to understand how the workspace usage has changed in the office since employees have started to leave the office to telework. This will then allow the organization to re-purpose under-used desks and cubicles and turn it into collaborative space that can be used for more meetings and collaboration between employees when they are present in the office.
