Real Estate Management Needs to Take On Greater Importance In The Public Sector

In a report conducted by Deloitte, “Space Based Budgeting”, the lack of efficient real estate management by the English Government is highlighted.

Recently the public sector has seen cuts, these cuts are changing the shape and trimming down the size of the government leaving nearly 440,000 square meters of workspace vacant, with another 100 square meters expected to become vacant in the near future.

Mike Turley, head of Deloitte’s public sector practice, has even noted that some departments of the government have occupancy rates as low as 40%. Real estate is typically the second largest expense for an organization after personnel but it remains overlooked in many situations. If 60% of government agencies’ real estate is going unused think about the costs that are going into unused assets.

The public sector needs to make real estate management a priority. They can do this by putting real estate management solutions in place to not only measure the usage of assets but also manage resources as well. By making real estate management a priority the English Government will be able to:

  • Reduce real estate costs
  • Consolidate property and real estate to eliminate unused space
  • Reduce energy costs and consumption

PeopleCube Attending WORKTECH11 & IFMA’s World Workplace In October

In the next few weeks we here at PeopleCube are very excited to be participating in two industry shows, WORKTECH11 and IFMA World Workplace.

WORKTECH11 West Coast

WORKTECH11 West Coast is the first of the two shows and will take place next Tuesday, October 11. The show is in Sunnyvale, CA at the Nokia HQ. Eric Anderson will be representing PeopleCube and will be exhibiting our Real Estate Management and Energy Management solutions, including scheduling software, occupancy detection solutions, as well as business intelligence solutions.

IFMA’s World Workplace 2011 Conference and Expo

Teleworking In Federal Government Catching On Faster Than Teleworking In The Private Sector

According to a report from the Telework Research Network the practice of teleworking or telecommuting is catching on with Federal agencies much quicker than it is in the private sector. What may be more surprising is most of the growth of telecommuting inside the government took place prior to the Telework Enhancement Act.

In trying to explain why the private sector may be behind the government in adopting teleworking programs, the biggest barrier seems to be manager acceptance despite a number of studies that have shown an increase in productivity among employees who telecommute.

Implementing a telecommuting strategy at an organization can produce cost savings stemming from reduced energy consumption and even reduced real estate.
