USDA Turns To Telecommuting To Save Over $200 Million
The USDA has increased their mobile workforce from 16,000 a year ago to more than 58,000 telecommuters today. The Department of Agriculture also hopes to continue to increase the size of their mobile workforce through the end of 2012.
The increase in telecommuters stems from requirements that were laid out in the Telework Enhancement Act of 2010. The USDA now has telework policies that include:
- Telework Agreement Form
- Technical Desk Guide For Workers
- Information on Wireless Connections
- An Interactive Telecommuting Training Program
The USDA is also working to be able to monitor and track teleworkers and statistics that come from their ability to telework.

Does Telecommuting Create Equality In The Workplace?
While scouring the internet I came across an interesting question. On TED.com, the question is posed,”With the current capabilities to work a wealth of jobs via the internet is the world shifting towards an equality where nationality and location are becoming things of the past?”
We see organizations implementing telecommuting programs all the time, and if it does create more equality in the workplace that’s great, but one thing is for certain. Organizations who implement telecommuting programs have a much larger talent pool to choose their employees from. As far as whether or not this practice is making different nationalities more equal, I couldn’t tell you, but it certainly has the potential to do that.
Organizations who have the technology in place to effectively run a telecommuting program can hire employees from any where in the world. This allows organizations to hire the top talent available regardless of where they are located.
Telecommuting Tools
Some of the the tools and technologies organizations would need to implement a successful telecommuting program are listed below:
Video Conferencing Equipment and Video Conferencing Scheduling Equipment
Resource Management Solutions- Even with employees working remotely they may need to schedule conference bridges or something of the like to conduct meetings.
SaaS- Software as a Service allows employees to access software they would in the office from wherever they may be through a web browser on a computer or even on a mobile device.
