FRAMINGHAM, Massachusetts—November 14, 2011—PeopleCube, provider of intelligent workplace, resource, and energy management technology, will be a featured presenter and sponsor at WORKTECH11 London.   Taking place November 16-17 at The British Library in London, the two-day conference will bring together the worlds of real estate, design, architecture, and technology to look at implications of convergence between the worlds of technology, real estate, work and the workplace.

During the conference, Peter Tarca, General Manager, Intelligent Buildings at PeopleCube will present “The Economic Benefits of Active Energy Management.” This presentation will explore the value of active energy management practices, the role it plays in intelligent buildings initiatives, and the importance of leveraging space utilization analytics to control an organization’s energy consumption.

PeopleCube will also be exhibiting its complete line of intelligent workplace management solutions that are designed to help organizations increase collaboration and productivity, maximize space utilization and efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and cut operating costs. Among the products on display will be the company’s advanced room and resource management solution, Resource Scheduler; its innovative occupancy detection and analysis technology, PeopleCounter Solutions; and Workplace BI, an intuitive business intelligence tool that collects and analyzes spatial utilization data.

“The issue of cost reductions is front and center as companies adjust to the continuing evolution of the modern workplace and workforce,” said Tarca.   As a result, organizations are looking to find ways to gain control over their three largest expenses – personnel, real estate, and energy – with solutions that deliver an accelerated ROI. We look forward to joining the Cordless Group once again this year and to showcase how organizations are able to leverage innovative workspace management solutions to enhance workplace and energy efficiency, increase productivity and collaboration, and significantly reduce overhead expenses.”

Organizations Still Not Placing Enough Importance On Energy Management

Richard Rugg, Director of Carbon Trust Programme, doesn’t understand why more organizations aren’t taking energy management seriously and quite frankly we here at PeopleCube couldn’t agree more. We’ve seen customers cut their energy costs by 30% or more simply by monitoring and controlling how – and when – their energy is consumed.

Of course efficiently managing an organizations energy consumption can reduce energy costs but the return on investment for energy management solutions goes beyond cutting energy costs. Managing an organization’s energy consumption can help an organization meet government energy standards that can lead to incentives like tax breaks.

A new guide, that was put together by Carbon Trust Programmes, compares poor energy management practices with good energy management practices.

Poor energy management practices are listed as; treating energy costs as an unquestioned overhead; having no clear or consistent chain of responsibility for energy management; a lack of awareness of energy issues; and procuring energy from the same supplier year-on-year, without a cost comparison.

Good energy management is treating energy as a strategic issue and its management as an opportunity, with strong guidance from board level permeating through to rewarded action throughout the workforce, with adequate resources and business planning attached to it.

There are a number of solutions available to assist organizations of all sizes in energy management. A true energy management program really needs to involve monitoring, controlling, and efficient scheduling of each and everyone of an organization’s resources.

Scheduling & Resource Management Can Improve The Efficiency of Meetings

Seth Godin recently published a blog suggesting that organization’s hire a “meeting fairy”. The idea is that meetings can get out of hand, unorganized, and inefficient- costing the company a tremendous amount of money when it all adds up.

Seth, you make some excellent points, and I encourage others to take a second and read this post it makes some excellent points like:

  • Meetings that tie up rooms well after the actual meeting is over because Outlook has scheduled a room for much longer than it needed to be scheduled for, for a particular meeting.
  • Meetings can be inefficient when proper visitor management isn’t taking place for participants that maybe from outside of the organization.
  • Lack of resource scheduling can cause your meeting to run less than smoothly if you don’t have a room that has the appropriate resource such as a projector or video conferencing equipment.

Seth suggests organizations hire a “meeting fairy” to improve the efficiency of an organization’s meetings. The cost up front would be higher in having to staff this position, but he believes it would bring more cost savings to the organization in the long run.

While Seth identifies a number of problems that organizations face with meeting scheduling every day, but there is another solution that can improve the efficiency of an organization’s meetings and resources that doesn’t require a fairy. PeopleCube offers resource scheduling software, actual space utilization tracking, occupancy detection solutions, and real estate business intelligence software that will improve the efficiency and scheduling of meeting rooms and other resources inside your organization.

Instead of a conference room being booked for two hours and only being used for 30 minutes our Outlook scheduling solutions can notify Outlook that a meeting room is available once it actually becomes open, not just when it is planned to be open. This is called actual space utilization. If you need specific resources in a meeting like video conferencing equipment or catering for a lunch meeting, our scheduling software can make sure the conference room being scheduled has all of those necessary resources and will make sure you don’t schedule an inadequate room for your meeting.

Canada Needs to Focus On Resource Management To Become More Energy Efficient

The Canadian Government is taking the lead on three pilot projects that will position them as global leaders in energy management.

The three energy management projects are:

  • Ontario Power Authority- This pilot project will help 5 Ontario manufacturing facilities successfully implement the ISO 50001 energy management standard.
  • 3M Pilot Program- The United States and Canada are launching a pilot program with the global technology firm 3M. The program will work to identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency in a Canadian plant.
  • Natural Resources Canada Buildings- The implementation of energy management standards will be tested.

With these three pilot programs the focus is on energy efficiency. Canada should and will be focused on resource management as they plan on actively engaging in the Super-Efficient Equipment and Appliances Deployment Act.

By implementing a resource management solution on all three of these projects Canada would be able to tighten up their resource scheduling and take actual space utilization and actual resource utilization data and put it to use to improve each of these buildings’ energy efficiency, allowing their businesses to become sustainable.

The United States Postal Service Turns To an Energy Management System

When the recession hit the United States many organizations suffered. The United States Postal Service was no different. The organization was suffering from a massive drop in revenue and looking for ways to save money.

The United States Postal Service has been successful in saving money concerning energy management. The organization has implemented an energy management system to measure, monitor, and manage facility energy data and performance. The energy management system has already saved the Postal Service more than $400 million in energy costs.

The energy management system is just one of the energy saving projects the United States Postal Service has underway. In January they announced they would spend $29 million to improve energy efficiency. The Postal Service would be wise to invest some of the $29 million in resource management solutions. By managing and effectively scheduling resources the organization would utilize their resources more efficiently, cut energy consumption, and cut costs. The Postal Service could integrate their resource management solutions with their energy management system to maximize their cost savings.
