The Benefits Of Presence & Occupancy Detection
Colleges & Universities Turn To SaaS & The Cloud To Reduce Costs
Recently Gilfus Education Group released an annual listing of top technology trends at universities and colleges. A highlight of the report was that more universities and colleges are beginning to depend on on-demand software and the cloud in an effort to cut costs.
On Demand, The Cloud, & SaaS On Campus
The truth is college campuses are a great place to implement on-demand, cloud, and SaaS solutions. For example, students and faculty could benefit greatly from scheduling software that can be accessed simply through a web browser or mobile device. This allows all members of the educational institution to schedule rooms or resources where ever they may be.
Scheduling software is one of the more obvious solutions for colleges and universities but there are other SaaS and On-Demand applications that can benefit these educational institutions.

GreenTechMedia.com’s 10 Steps to Effective Workplace Energy Efficiency
An article on GreentechMedia.com lays out 10 steps to effective workplace energy efficiency. You can read the full article here, but the 10 steps are:
- Upper management must take ownership of the energy efficiency program.
- Make the program public, so employees and tenants at all levels buy in.
- Offer motivation through branding, and energy efficiency program swag.
- Create teams and committees to execute energy management plans across the organization.
- Assign champions to be exemplary participants in different energy efficiency programs.
- Have effective communication concerning the energy efficiency program.
- Provide feedback that enables individuals to change their personal behavior when it comes to energy management.
- Tie energy consumption and reduction into performance reviews.
- Invest in automation and occupancy detection technology.
- Track and report accurate energy consumption data.
It’s a great article, I noticed the last two steps in particular.
Occupancy detection devices allow an organization to automatically control lighting and heating and cooling systems automatically when individuals enter and exit a room. These systems can also be automatically controlled when they’re integrated with scheduling software. This allows an organization to take tighter control of their energy consumption by eliminating human error and carelessness.
The tenth step, addressing tracking and reporting is something we place a huge importance on here at PeopleCube. We truly believe that you can’t manage what you don’t measure. So tracking and measuring energy consumption is extremely important. This can be done through energy management systems, business intelligence solutions, and occupancy detection devices.

Going Green In 2012 Through Telecommuting
We’re approaching the end of the year and that means it’s time to start thinking about New Years Resolutions. On an individual level many of us will start looking to cure bad habits or possibly lose some weight, but in the corporate world I would guess that a popular resolution or goal for organizations is to become more green in the new year.
So how can companies go green in the new year? Telecommuting is one major way companies can reduce their energy consumption. The beauty of telecommuting is not only has it been able to reduce the carbon footprint of many organizations but many studies show that it improves employee morale and productivity.
Of course just telling employees they can telecommute won’t automatically reduce energy consumption. You need the right solutions in place to manage a telework program. Solutions that can assist your organization in reducing energy consumption include; scheduling software, energy management solutions, real estate business intelligence software, and occupancy detection solutions.
