Telecommuting and Real Estate Management To Address Budget Concerns
You’d have to be living under a rock to not know that state and local governments have had to make tough decisions due to the recession. We’ve seen programs and services that serve the community have to be cut because the funds simply aren’t there. As a result, a number of government agencies are beginning to search for solutions that can save money and hopefully create enough room in the budget to keep programs alive that serve employees and the community.
Telecommuting
Telecommuting is one solution that can certainly save government agencies money. The costs of putting an employee up in an office can add up to close to $10,000 a year! Just think if you could reduce that, obviously there will be times where employees need to be present in the office, and if a telecommuting program that takes that into account is implemented organizations and agencies could stand to save even more money.
To run a successful telecommuting program it should really be part of a larger real estate management strategy. Implementing a telecommuting program may give an organization the opportunity to reduce it’s real estate, and certainly reduce it’s energy consumption. The key is being able to monitor and measure how your resources and real estate are being used.
When an organization or agency implements a telecommuting program, part of that may be creating shared workspace that employees can book through scheduling software when they are present in the office. That scheduling software can be integrated with energy management systems to be powered only when it’s scheduled to be used. It can also be integrated with real estate business intelligence software that allows you to monitor energy consumption and actual versus planned utilization of the the shared workspace. This data can then be used to make tough real estate decisions that would create savings for an organization or agency based on reduced real estate and energy consumption.

Tools For The Growing Telecommuting Workforce
With new technology, energy concerns, and an economy on the comeback trail the IDC or International Data Corporation is predicting that over the next 4 years telecommuting will create more than 3 million corporate home offices.
The IDC predicts that as the economy continues to improve we’ll see 180,000 additional telecommuters joining the mobile workforce each year through 2015.
Essential Telecommuting Tools
With the increased number of employees expected to begin telecommuting and joining the mobile workforce it’s extremely important that these telecommuters have the tools necessary to be productive while utilizing alternative workspace opposed to their familiar desks at a corporate office. Here are some tools all telecommuters should have to remain productive.
Telecommuting Tools
- Scheduling Software- With employees working outside of the office it’s extremely important that they are able to schedule a number of different resources their organization has made available to them. This could include anything from phone bridges, equipment, or even a meeting room for when they are in the office. Scheduling software made available through SaaS or Software-as-a-Service allows telecommuters to schedule rooms and resources wherever they may be.
- Mobile Devices- With telecommuters being out of the office and often times on the move, more employees are turning to cell phones, tablets, and laptops to access work email, and other software.
- Shared Workspace- Even though employees are leaving the office and telecommuting much more frequently there are still times where they may need to be in the office. Organizations can make the most efficient use of their office space by doing away with permanent desks and converting these work areas into shared workspace. Telecommuting employees can then book shared workspace as they need it. Shared workspace can be manged through scheduling software.
