Greater Participation In 2nd Telework Week

Today, March 9, is the last day of Telework Week 2012. Telework Week began on Monday, March 5. This was the second annual Telework Week. The event is meant to encourage agencies, organizations, and individuals to pledge to telework in an effort to create sustainability, business continuity, increased productivity, and a reduction of traffic, greenhouse gas emissions, and wear and tear on public transportation.

The number of federal employees who pledged to telework in the 1st installment of Telework Week saw an increase of over 20,000 employees to 66,000 pledges to telework. It is estimated that telework created $5,301,811 dollars in savings during Telework Week this year. If the employees who participated in Telework Week were to continue telecommuting for a year, savings could total $265,090,568.

Sustainability: A Supervening Social Necessity

It seems like every day, month, or week sustainability becomes a larger focus. Now it’s becoming arguable that sustainability is a supervening social necessity.

The definition of “supervening social necessity” may even be shorter than the term itself, it’s simply a requirement from society that motivates the development of technology. The need to cut costs, reduce energy consumption, and becoming energy efficient seem to certainly be pushing new technologies every day. Sustainability has pushed technologies like SaaS and the cloud, energy management solutions, occupancy detection, and real estate management solutions.

Energy Management & Sustainability Among Commercial Real Estate Trends In 2011

The CEO of one of our partners, Jones Lang LaSalle, Colin Dyer, will be speaking in Davos, Switzerland. He’ll be discussing 4 commercial real estate trends that are emerging in the global economic recovery in 2011. The press release states that Dyer will touch upon topics like sustainability and energy management.

Commercial Real Estate Trends

The four commercial real estate trends Dyer will be discussing are:

  1. Property market recovery encourages globalization of capital flows and liquidity improvement in the investment markets.
  2. Commercial property recaptures its place as a preferred institutional investment category.
  3. Capital sources demand increased transparency
  4. Sustainability and energy management climb the corporate agenda.

What looks to be most interesting to me is number 4, concerning sustainability and energy management climbing corporate agendas. At PeopleCube we have been noticing this trend for a while now and can’t stress enough the importance of sustainable real estate and energy management inside an organization.

Energy management is truly an investment and not just an expense. A company who is effectively practicing energy management will see a number of benefits including:

  • Reduced costs based on reduced energy consumption
  • An improved public image
  • A more efficient workplace
