Next Week Is National Telework Week
Next week, March 5-9 is Telework Week 2012 in the United States. This is the second annual Telework Week. The idea behind Telework Week is to encourage employees and their organizations to make a pledge to telecommute between March 5-9.
Organizations and employees who telework or work remotely often see an increase in morale and productivity, it encourages flexible work arrangements, improves work life balance, and even increases the rate of retention and ability to hire top talent for organizations.
Other Benefits of Telework
- Reduced Energy Consumption
- Reduced Energy Costs
- Reduced Carbon Emissions
- Reduced Traffic Congestion on Roadways
Telework Solutions
There are a number of reasons to telework for both the employee and an organization. It is also important to have the right solutions in place to be effective and fully reap the benefits of a telework program.
Office Hoteling
Employees who do telework will be in the office from time to time as well, so they will still need space to work. It is expensive to maintain a permanent workspace for employees who won’t be in the office at all times. You can maintain shared workspace for an office hoteling program that employees can book when present.

SaaS
SaaS or Software as a Service allows employees to access the same programs they do in the office on a daily basis wherever they may be through a web browser. This makes sure employees can be just as effective whether they are in the office or working from their kitchen table.
Workplace BI
If your organization is beginning to telework, there will be a major change in the usage of your rooms and resources with less employees being present on a daily basis. For this reason it is incredibly important to track and understand the utilization of rooms and resources. Real Estate Business Intelligence Software allows you to see and understand different utilization trends. This information will then help you make decisions about your real estate and energy consumption that will allow you to cut costs.
Infographic Highlights Trends In Telecommuting
At one time it was predicted that telecommuting would be the primary way of working by the early 21st century. While the number of telecommuters is growing, adoption has certainly been slowed by management not buying into the benefits telework can produce based on their mistrust of their employees. Below is a great info graphic that outlines some of the facts on telecommuting.

One interesting “Potential Drawback” listed in the graphic was that employees needed to be tech savvy to be an efficient teleworker. IN the past this may have been true, but with the technology we have available to us today like The Cloud and SaaS, most of the software and data accessed in the office can be accessed the same way from anywhere else. So I would find it hard to consider your employees’ skills when it comes to technology a big deal. A bigger concern would be whether or not your organization has the right solutions and tools in place to facilitate telework.
